I recently found myself on a panel, speaking on the topic of a portfolio career; a concept I’ve been discussing on TikTok since 2024. At the time, my concept was novel, though it seems to have garnered some traction since. That said, much of the discussion around a portfolio career today seems misguided vs my initial intention, so I wanted to take a moment and clarify a) what a portfolio career actually is, and b) what it can do for your career (hint: a lot).
Love this! The question I would have is how to get myself into these positions/roles/opportunities. I feel like at the start of your career you get "branded" into a certain discipline, so it is very difficult to make a move from "branding" or "marketing" into business or consulting for example.
I also think the level at which you play for each of these chapters is important. Okay being a CMO at a successful startup opens a lot of doors after, but what if it ends up failing? Would the same doors be open after, how would it be perceived differently?
I wonder how someone could leverage a portfolio career in both private equity and brand strategy to spot market gaps and create a product that aligns with both financial and consumer insights, showing how diverse experience can lead to innovative solutions.
I like the reframe here, most people confuse a portfolio career with juggling more, when it's really about testing which skill actually compounds with the next one, not just adding another job title. Being the least experienced person in the room on purpose is a real signal too, that's basically choosing to be tested again instead of coasting on what already worked.
I love this concept of your resume being your thesis & building towards your thesis of what you are interested in, where you provide value, and who you want to be.
I've never read strategic career pivots positioned like this before. I imagine a collection of cards slowly cultivated to show up in life with a winning hand. Based on your writing style, I believe you are already lethal. The authenticity resonates.
